Afifa Hashimi

Associate

Afifa (she/her/hers) practices in all areas of labour, employment, human rights, regulatory and administrative law. She articled with us at Moore Edgar Lyster LLP, and joined us as an associate when she was called to the bar.

While in law school, Afifa completed co-op work terms at West Coast LEAF and in-house at a large BC union. In her summer prior to law school, she worked for the Migrant Workers Centre as a community outreach coordinator. These experiences reinforced her interest in human rights and advocating on behalf of workers and unions.

Afifa was also an active member of her law school community. She served as the law student society's Equity Representative and held leadership roles in the Labour Law Club, the Feminist Law Students’ Association, and the Racialized Law Students Collective. Afifa also strengthened her advocacy skills as a participant in the BC Law Schools Competitive Moot, which her team won.

Committed to advancing knowledge of labour and human rights law, Afifa delivers presentations and legal education through various conferences and organizations. Afifa has also engaged in advocacy, research, writing, and public legal education, with a focus on human rights, and racial and gender justice. She is the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association’s 2024 Douglas Miller Rising Star Award.

Afifa is currently the Communications Officer of the Canadian Bar Association's national Constitutional and Human Rights Law Executive. She has also served as a Chair of the Human Rights Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association - BC Branch (CBABC), an Executive of the South Asian Legal Clinic of BC (SALCBC), and a director and a Vice President of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society (FACL BC). She is an associate producer of FACL BC’s 2021 documentary about discrimination. Outside of work, Afifa enjoys art and poetry.
